About Lake Mburo National Park : Lake mburo national park is among the national park in Uganda, considered to be the smallest savannah national park found in Nyabushozi county, Kiruhura district, 30km from Mbarara in the western part of Uganda . The park is close to the highway that connects kampala. It is the closest park from both kampala and Entebbe. The park was established in 1983, covering the total area of 260km squared with wetlands, ancient rocks, rolling hills , golden savannah , forests , swamps , lodging, , wildlife for safari tours to spot wide range of animals and course of 6 lakes of which lake mburo is the largest and Known , Lake Kigambira , Lake Mutukula, Lake Kazuma and Lake Bwara.
How to get there ;
You can be in Lake mburo national park either by self-drive or through tour agent/ any company of your preference .You may have to book in advance with you company /tour agent to organize for you trip and for self –drive people you reach out Uganda wildlife authority for direction and any other information you may want to know. It takes approximately 3-4 hours’ drive from Entebbe/kampala to Lake mburo national park by road transport and 30 minutes’ flight from Entebbe international airport to Nyakisharara Airstrip in Mbarara then 45 minutes’ drive from the airstrip to be transferred to the park.
Lake Mburo national park charges Entrance fee ; that’s the money charged by (government body) Uganda wildlife Authority in charge of Tourism from Tourists Before accessing the park promises. Foreign residents are charged 30 USD per person, Non foreign residents are charged 40USD per person and Ugandans 20,000 ugx per adult and children are charged 20usd per child non-foreign resident , 10usd per child foreign resident and 5,000 ugx per child Ugandan . Park Entrance permits are given at both Nshara and sanga gates.
Lake mburo national park has many different attractions and activities (Please note that each activity in the park is paid for ) include;
Game viewing : since there are over 68 species of mammals that incudes ; zebras, Uganda kobs , antelopes , bush bucks , buffaloes , warthog , impalas , hyena , jackals among others , The park is famous for more Impalas and zebras.
Boat trips : at Lake Mburo that will give you a chance to see Hippos, Crocodiles and birds. Boat trips are charged 30,000ugx per person Ugandans, 30USD per person for both Foreign and foreign residents and permits are paid on the gates .
Birding : bird watching activity especially for bird lovers since the park has over 300 species of birds They Include; Black Crake, Common Squacco, Striated, Goliath, Purple, Black-headed, Grey, and Black-headed Herons among many other. you can find these birds in forest, swamp valleys ,bush etc.
Sport fishing in mazinga areas in lake mburo : The lake has 6 species of fish that includes; mad fish , lung fish, cart fish , tilapia , angara fish and barbell. The commonly known fish caught in lake Mburo is Tilapia.
Walking night safaris : horseback riding especially at mihingo lodge charged 60 USD, Visiting eclipse monument at igongo, nature walks in the park, Visiting the equator , Bicycle tours
Cultural visits : in the local village where tourists are entertained with traditional local dances, participating in process of Milking the long horned cattle , chumming, ghee making and making crafts from local materials. Bahima and banyankole are the common tribes/ community around Lake Mburo National Park. etc
Lake mburo national park has different categories of lodging/accommodation inside and outside. They are eco- friendly lodges, guesthouse and hotels with budget option, mid- range and luxury that meets guests choices. Budget lodges in lake mburo national include; eagles nest lodge, mpogo lodge, Hyena hill eco lodge, leopards rest camp, Rwoonyo rest camp that is operated by Uganda wildlife Authority. Mid- range lodges include; Arcadia cottages l. Mburo , Rwakobo rock lodge with perfect views of the park, Mburo safari lodge , Mantana tented camp, Kigarama wilderness camp , among others. Luxury lodges include; Mihingo lodge with luxury standard . It offers horse riding safari activity, Kigambira safari lodge is the newly built luxury accommodation overlooking lake kigambira, Emburara farm lodge .
