Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the top large primeval forest in Africa and not only in Africa but worldwide, located in the south western part of Uganda in the Kanungu District. Moreover, is one of the ancient nature forest still surviving with the remaining half endangered mountain gorillas in the world. Uganda is a God gifted country to host such incredible high population of great apes which are said to be 98% of human genes. Due to its biological diverse with half of the world’s population which estimates more than 500 mountain gorillas. However, the forest has been recognized by the ‘’UNE’’ United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a UNESCO Heritage Site for its biological significance. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is renowned as a home for endangered mountain gorillas which can be trekked in several habituated groups comprised in four gorilla sectors such as Ruhija sector, Rushaga sector, Buhoma sector and Nkuringo sector which are worth a visit. It is also diverse region that provides shelter to over 120 mammals including several primate species like chimpanzees, baboons as well as elephants and antelopes, over 400 varied plant species can be seen here. The park is a paradise for bird species of around 350 species which can to be viewed in the tropical forest, including the 23 Albertine Rift endemics. Some of these bird species to be spotted include African board bill, Black bee-eater, Black faced rufous warbler, Blue-headed sunbird, Cinnamon-chested bee-eater, Handsome francolin, Yellow-streaked green bull, Olive-breasted greenbul, western green tinker bird, Ruwenzori Turaco among others.

Despite, Bwindi impenetrable forest   has become famous in the world because of the incredible Gorilla trekking. That habitats half of the world’s remaining Mountain Gorilla with over 500 individuals of the 800 mountain gorillas in the entire world. Although the number is increasing year by year but they tend to face a great challenge in poaching, habitant loss and diseases. Bwindi is under the protection of Uganda wildlife Authority. 

Climate and Weather –Bwindi Impenetrable National park

Bwindi impenetrable national park offers a tropical rain forest with an annual temperature that ranges of a minimum of 7 to 15 degrees Celsius to a maximum of 20 to 27 degrees Celsius. The park’s annuals rainfall ranges from 1,400 to 1,900 millimeters. The heavy rains tend to fall from March to April and from September to November, A4x4-wheel drive is recommended within this season to access the park.

Gorilla Trekking

This is a fabulous safari activity done here in Bwindi forest, that starts early in the morning at around 8:00am, trekkers have to first meet at the park head quarter for a short briefing about gorilla rules but you must be 8people per group to participate in this undoubtedly activity. After a short briefing, you meet your guide to lead you to one of the gorilla habituated group in one of the four gorilla sector could be Buhoma sector. The trek can go beyond 30 to 8 hours while in their nature habitants that why you’re being given packed lunch box to be carried with you. As you can be trekking in forest trails, you get a chance to see other species such as monkeys, tree species while listening to sweet melodies of birds of the air singing. Once you meet the family you’re met to trek in, you will be given one hour to watch their amazing lifestyle as swinging on the tree branches, grooming their young ones, feeding, playing as well as taking photos, this can be moments of excitement, joy in life time. Watch them till evening as they lay their nest for bed rest. Note, for you to be able to engage in this emotional activity, you must be holding a valid gorilla permit as an evidence to trek in one of the sector. Uganda Gorilla Permits are sold at USD700 per trek per day. Gorilla habituation which is a full day activity cost USD 1500 Per trek.

What to carry with you?

  • Stay away 7 meters from the gorillas
  • Flash dis cameras are not allowed in the mist with gorillas.
